The X100 is able to achieve highly accurate mapping, whenever and wherever needed, even in less than favourable weather conditions (wind, light rain, cloud cover) where conventional photogrammetry simply won't suffice, while keeping both feet firmly on the ground. The X100 has been designed to be used just like any other surveying device and complements existing GPS and Total Station equipment. We have spent over a year investigating lots of exciting new technology available for surveying. We decided to buy the X100 because of its ability to handle the NZ wind conditions and the extraordinary range of applications it can be

Pilbrow Surveying Limitedused for. Initially we will be using it to supplement our work in quarries where it will make the work much safer. Then the sky is the limit after that - infrastructure mapping, waste management, forest monitoring, archaeological research, vegetation mapping and even grape selection using a near infrared camera are possible applications of the system.
The X100 is made of expanded polypropylene reinforced with a carbine fibre skeleton allowing the entire system to weight only 2kg. Powered by a lithium polymer battery and propelled by an electric motor at the rear it cruises at 75 km/hr and is able to stay aloft for 45 minutes. Image acquisition is achieved by using a high-resolution digital still camera on board. A predefined area is covered through parallel sweeps and consecutive, overlapping camera shots. The flight is fully automated from launch to landing. The ground control station The X100 infographic showing procedure

Pilbrow Surveying Limited are the first company in New Zealand to purchase the Gatewing X100 aerial mapping system. Our X100 has been in five flights since being received from Synergy Positioning. We have carried out a trial flight over the office and another trial over stockpiles at Kopuku. Then three flights were carried out over the Envirofert site in Tuakau to prepare a site plan for them. The flights have been safely achieved and after this initial testing period we can now zoom ahead with confidence in the system. We are purchasing a “super” computer to handle the very intensive computing requirement of the photogrammetry software. This will reduce the time it will take to transform the images gathered by the X100 into a useable product. Launch and landing areas are inspected to ensure safety clearances are available. Then the launcher is setup with the safety pin in place to prevent premature take off. The camera is adjusted for the current light conditions then mounted in the X100. The project flight path is uploaded to the GCS and a simulation flight carried out to ensure it is okay. Only now is the battery inserted into the X100 and the flight plan uploaded. The elevon response is tested before the launcher is tightened and the X100 placed on the dock. The pitot Text Box: tube is covered and the X100 cycled to reset the barometric pressure and airspeed indicator. The on site wind is rechecked before arming the unit. A final “Safe Moment” is taken to ensure all is clear before launching. During the flight the X100 is monitored visually and with the GCS. After landing the flight log and images are downloaded and inspected to see that all is well.
Below are sample products: Some site plans prepared using geo-rectified images and an animation showing a 3D model of stockpiles.
